How it works
Plastics are made up from millions of chains of carbon and hydrogen molecules. Under normal circumstances these molecular chains are incredibly strong and therefore plastics can take many years before they even begin to break down in the environment.
When exposed to UV light, heat or mechanical stress through general use, the degradable additive is triggered into action and starts to break down the links in the molecular chains causing the carbon and hydrogen molecules to react with the oxygen molecules in the air.
New compounds forged from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen form the source on which micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi feed and naturally break down the plastic. |
